So you say there’s nothing to do in Kennewick? Well, I’ll have you know I went to Rite Aid–yes, the old Rite Aid behind Columbia Center Mall–not once, but twice this weekend. I hadn’t been in ages, and then suddenly, it was upon me. And oh, was it good.
Friday night found me at a girls night out (yay!) with some friends of mine who work with Derrick and were kind enough to include me in their fun. We started the evening w/dinner (remind me to post later on the female fascination with Applebees appetizers) and then hit “Baby Mama,” which was actually pretty funny (I’ll give it 3 1/2 stars).
**As I’m typing this, Derrick just shoved his new, fancy shmancy running socks in my face, forcing me to smell them after he took a long run. He exclaimed, “These socks are amazing! Even after I run in them, they smell like they just came out of the dryer!” Smelly or not, I do not appreciated just-ran-in-socks shoved in my face. And please see my last post on the word “amazing.”**
Okay. So after Applebee’s and before Baby Mama, we wanted treats for the movie, and why should we pay theater prices when we each had a purse large enough to haul in a package of Oreos and a gallon of milk? So we proceeded, and would you believe me if I told you I spent more on candy than I did on dinner? For real.
Saturday came and D. and I headed out for a blessed night alone. Yummy Thai food and some clothes shopping for Derrick left me with a sweet tooth. We wandered through Fuzziwigs in search of something, but I was too cheap to pay the $4.95 for a handful of Runts. We wanted to spend our last hour out browsing Barnes and Noble and I toyed with the option of a gourmet cookie or cake, but again my humble roots kept me from paying four dollars for a Rice Krispie treat. Well, guess what just happens to sit right across the parking lot of B&N;?
Oh, the ecstasy! My second trek to the great RA in less than 24 hours, and just as much money spent on junk. We returned to Barnes and Noble with our booty in tow, and I flipped through a book entitled (I’m not kidding here), The Taste of Sweet: Exploring our Relationship with our Favorite Treats. I plopped down in a comfy chair and inhaled a package of Neccos in approximately one minute while I read about our nations obsession with sugar. D. was off browsing his own books, and we reunited just in time to split a Kit Kat before heading home. It was a great night, a great weekend, and good eats at a very good price.
I love neccos. Always have. A-L-W-A-Y-S. I too, don’t know another adult who would comsume them. Except for you, Jen. Love twizzlers, red vines (second to twizzlers), licorice ropes, nibs, black, red, you name it. And don’t get me wrong, I do love me some chocolate at the movies: junior mints, milk duds, etc.
And Ashley, I’m right there with you in the proverbial Krispy Kreme line.
Ashley, you are too funny. I am laughing so hard right now I can scarcely begin.
#1: How dare you dis on the ‘ole Neccos! They’ve been a movie staple since I was a kid (ask Sarah; as I recall, she never appreciated them, either) And Derrick gets angry when I even suggest them as a treat. No one in my family can stand them either. Come to think of it, I’ve yet to meet another human being who likes Neccos. At all. What is going on here? I feel like the guy on “I am Legend.”
#2 I just realized my airy/sugary fetish only applies when I’m watching a movie (Red Vines are my other movie staple. Don’t even get me started on waxy, nasty Twizzlers.) This must be b/c of the great mileage; a licorice rope will at least get me through the first preview, while a Snickers is gone before the lights are dimmed.
#3: What’s this “BECOMING a health nut” stuff? I thought that was the way you always saw me. Was I wrong? Surely, you didn’t think my pounding down soda, eating oversized pork sandwiches or dragging-our-sixsome-through-a- mile-long-line-on-overcrowded-Main-Street-so-ONLY-I-could-get-an-ice-cream was normal behavior for me, did you? A deviation from my normally disciplined consumption, to be sure. That, and the half-batch of chocolate chip cookie dough (our favorite recipe) I scarfed down just before reading your comment. Far less calories when it’s raw, no?
I LOVE you for mentioning Fiddle Faddle–that is by far the zenith of forbidden snacks, and completely underappreciated by our culture (as most brilliant things are.) Let’s vow to share a box next time we meet (forget that–we’ll each have our own!)
I am not above stuffing my carry on luggage with treats from the local Walgreens before hitting the local theater either ($1 refill souvenir cup in hand), but I certainly wouldn’t waste that limited space on flavorless discs of pastel sugar. I can’t believe Neccos would even be available this time of year, since surely their only use is as tiles on the annual gingerbread house. Jen, I thought I knew you better. I once made myself late for a movie by demanding that the Walgreens clerk not just check the inventory, but radio the closest truck to find out when the next shipment of Skor toffee bars or Heath bars would arrive. As it was, they were completely out of stock and I had to settle for a few boxes of Fiddle Faddle and a handful or two of my old standby “fun size” Snickers, (not to be confused with the less caloric “bite size” version, obviously). Don’t think you can redeem yourself with a “shared” Kit Kat either. Those things are 90% air. I don’t know Jen, Derrick climbing the Himalayas, you becoming a health nut….. I just hope there is still a place in your life for a girl who camped out for days to be first in line at the recently opened Krispy Kreme.
Oh yeah–I think your pure sugar/non-chocolate sweet tooth is rubbing off on me; lately, I just want the airy chemical stuff–much cheaper, too!
BTW, thanks for your great comments (they’re better than my posts). I’m still figuring out how to publish them automatically w/o having to view them via email, which is why I’ve been slow to respond. And thanks to you both for the enthusiasm on my blog (unwarranted as it may be, it’s still appreciated =)
Rite Aid sounds like Pick-A-Pop on crack: A 10 year old’s dream – and also a 35 year old’s.
Yeah! A blog – I will check with excitement every day. Well, maybe not every day! I have to admit that yesterday I went to the store for a few things and was gone an hour just to be alone! Rite-Aid will be my next childless trip!!!
I’m sorry about the socks … but, you have to admit, they are AMAZING!
